Frequently asked questions
WHAT IS PILATES AND WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL?
Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900's, pilates is a highly sophisticated approach to training the body that seeks to develop core strength and stability (rather than muscular bulk) in order to allow the body to move in the most efficient way possible.
Joseph Pilates created over 500 exercises using five primary pieces of unique equipment to balance muscular development throughout the body. Rather than performing endless repetitions of each exercise, Joseph preferred fewer, more precise movements, emphasizing proper control and form. The deep muscles of the abdomen, back, and pelvis (including glutes) are strengthened to provide you with a more stable, strong and flexible center, or “core”.
Muscle imbalances that generate pain have their origins in poor posture, poor health, workplace conditions, sporting injuries and repetitive strain on structures about the shoulder girdle and low back. All of the joints in the body should be held in their optimum natural position, in mid range, this is possible when both stabilizing and mobilizing muscle types work together.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PILATES?
strengthen the deep core muscles, which include muscles of the low back, hips and glutes
improves cardiovascular conditioning
great cross training form of exercise
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE AMP GROUP CLASSES AND A PRIVATE OR SEMI-PRIVATE CLASS?
AMP classes are a fresh, upbeat approach to Pilates that’s fun, challenging and completely addicting. AMP group classes are limited to 8 participants at a time and spend the entire time on Allegro 2 reformers. Although the entire 55 minutes are spent on the reformer, don’t worry about boredom… there are over 500 exercises that can be done on the reformer that will strengthen and stretch each muscle of your body for a workout like you have never had before.
Private and Semi-Private classes are conducted in our second studio, which is fully equipped with Balanced Body reformers, chairs, barrels and even a cadillac! Private and Semi-Private classes are more individualized according to what your body needs that particular day. Private and semi-private classes are booked with the specific instructor of your choice, according to you schedule. For semi-private classes, you must bring your own partner. If your partner cannot make the session for the day, you will need to bring another partner or be prepared to pay the private session rate.
WHAT TO WEAR?
Wear comfortable clothing that you can easily move in, similar to that of yoga class or the gym. If you choose to wear looser shorts, please wear spandex underneath.
Safety and Sanitary is a must, studio policy requires everyone to wear tread socks during class. Treadsocks are available for purchase at AMP if you don’t own any
Jewelry and strong fragrance are not advised.
You may want to bring a fitness towel and water as you will most likely sweat. No glass bottles please.
HOW LONG ARE YOUR CLASSES?
All classes are 55 minutes long.
DO YOU HAVE DIFFERENT CLASSES BASED ON EXPERIENCE LEVELS?
Private and semi-private classes will be tailed by your instructor for exactly what you body needs that session.
AMP group classes are for all ability levels. New clients do not need to take a private session before joining an AMP group class. Throughout the class, your instructor will give modifications so you can self-adjust making the workout as challenging as needed. Beginners are most successful by simply listening and combing their instructors cuing with their neighbors movement/body form and getting into the exercises as briskly as possible. However, if a new client would like a private session or two before joining the group class, that is always an option.
HOW DO I SCHEDULE A CLASS?
We use an online reservation system called Mind Body that may be accessed through our website or downloaded to your phone. Mind Body is very user friendly in addition to being a highly secure software system to assist you in booking a session. Using the online scheduler is the easiest, fastest, and most accurate way to book and or cancel classes. However, if you are not comfortable using the online scheduler, you are always welcome to call us or drop in to schedule your sessions.
HOW MANY TIMES PER WEEK DO YOU RECOMMEND I ATTEND CLASS?
The number of times per week you take a class depends on your goals.
For maximum results, 3 times a week is optimal (although you will see good results with 2 times a week). The workout is high intensity challenging many muscles at the same time. Three times a week will allow your body proper recovery time.
If Pilates is more of a supplemental or cross-training exercise for you, one or two times a week is sufficient.
We always suggest listening to your body and to find a schedule that works best for you. Do keep in mind your results depend on your discipline, diet and consistency. You can’t out train a poor diet.
ARE MY SESSIONS REFUNDABLE OR TRANSFERABLE?
Memberships and prepaid packages are not refundable nor are they transferable
WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?
AMP requires 24 hour cancellation notice if you cannot make your scheduled class. There are no exceptions.
If you do not show up to your class and/or do not give 24 hour notice for a cancellation, you will lose the full price of the class.
The easiest way to cancel a class is by going to our online schedule to cancel. During business hours, you may call and speak with an AMP employee to cancel your class. An email or voicemail is not acceptable for cancellation (as emails and voice mails do not allow us to immediately cancel on our schedule).
